We were given time in class to do our notes, and our First Knight questions. We were supposed to do the geography challenge, but someone stole Marks notes so that delayed it to past 12:55

Why?

We did the catch-up because most people weren't finished the work

Connection

Note taking can be very important when you go to work, and when you visit events that you want to remember stuff on.

Reminders

Remember to read your assigned novel and have a great winter break!

Homework

Homework is to finish the book a week after we came back to school.

Learning log for thursday dec. 15 2010

What we did

We did geography challenge practice while Ms. Lees is assigning our books to read during the winter break. After we got our book we silent reading till the block is over. Next block we silent reading again for twenty minutes and then Ms. Lees show how to do a web so we can do our book’s web for just main idea not the detail.

Why?

The geography challenge practice is to help us practicing how to do and what is the rule. The silent reading is for the web. If we haven’t read the book we can’t do the web, so we have to read the book to do web. Web is for a main idea what are we doing after we came back from break and finished the book.

Connection

The web can be use anywhere and for everything. The geography is for the knowledge we have and this knowledge can be use in future too.

Homework

Homework is to finish the book a week after we came back to school.

Learning Log for December 13th 2011

What we did

Today there was a stacks of books on each group of tables, a lot of people were wondering what they are for. It turns out we are rating the books for our novel during the winter break. Ms.Lees handed out a worksheet. First we have to look at the back cover of the book to get an idea on what the book is about. Then you read the first few pages of that book, after that you start to write the worksheet base on that book you just read. On the worksheet we have to write the book title and author, then circle how challenge this book is for you. Next thing you have to do is to circle how much you want to read this book, and write the rationale why you like it or why don’t you want to read it. We did this for the all the books on the table it was seven, it took about the whole block because for every book you spend about 5 to 10 minutes. When you’re finished with all seven books, you rank them, and hand it to the teacher.

Why we did it

We picked out books so we can read during the two week winter break. We rated the books so Ms.Lees can get an idea of the level we are at and the kind of books the majority of us likes to read. So she can pick out the ones that we are okay with, and so we won’t get books that we don’t want to read.

Reflections/Connections

I think some books are interesting and some looks really boring, but because I only read a few pages I shouldn’t make the decision so fast. The books are okay, they weren’t as hard as I think, I thought the vocabulary would be very challenging.

Reading is very important no matter it is in any language or subject, reading can help increase your vocabulary. In the future, you might apply job that is similar to this. You’ll need to rate things and write the reasons to support your thinking.

Homework

Having a spelling bee and watching a movie was more fun than normal school work.

Reminders:
First knight questions due Monday. Pancake breakfast is Friday and I think the bell schedule is different.

Learning log for 08/12/2011

What We Did

We watched the move: First Knight today, and Ms. Lees gave us questions that we had to answer during and after the movie.

We haven't finished the movie because it was 133 minutes long, thus we shall finish it on Friday or Monday.

Monday is when the questions are due.

Why?

I'm not sure why but it's probably half for our amusment, and half for learning about cultures and multiple other things that were common in the Middle Ages. As well as to improve our note taking skills and our attention to detail.

Tips

Canspell is tomorrow so study hard and good luck!

learning log for tuesday Dec. 6 2011

What we did

We did the Canspell practice first when the class starts. Three people got to the third round and because they all got wrong, they support to keep going until someone got right, but Ms. Lees want to keep going so we stop there. After that we watched a video about middle ages, and took note about the video. It is our first oral note taking and it was pretty fast so sometime Ms. Lees will stopped the video and we could take the note.

Why?

We do the canspell because the spelling bee is coming on this Friday. The note taking for the video is to practice our note taking skill and know what happened in middle ages.

Connection

The canspell will help us for spelling no matter where are we and when. It will help us forever. The note taking skill is important. We will always need the note taking skill when we are in university.

Tips

Canspell is coming on Friday. Make sure you study it and you can go to canspell’s web site for more information or games.

Learning log for Friday December 2nd

What we did
For the entire day we just did a geography test. People who didn’t finish
by the test by the end of class can either stay after school and finish or come
at 7:45 on Monday.

Why we did it/ learning intention
We did the test so Ms. Lees can see what level we are on in geography, so
we can show what we learned, and so we can review.

My reflection/ connection
Doing tests a lot will make you less nervous.
I think I should study more next time.

Reminders
Study for your Canspell and remember to come Monday if you didn’t finish
your test. Also don’t forget to do your QAR.
Dylan is doing the next learning log.

Learning Log for December 1st 2011

What we did

In the beginning of the first block Ms. Lees taught us some note taking skills. We took the Pathways textbook and Ms. Lees showed us how to look for text features the different font of titles and subtitles, that way the note taking process will be easier and faster. We worked on our note taking skills for the rest of the block, from page 9 to 20 we had to take notes in the outline form. Ms. Lees wants us to learn different note taking skills so we had to do the web form of note taking from page 21 to 29. While we’re doing our work Ms. Lees helped some students with their geography, some people were unclear and some people were struggling with calculating distance and scale factors. Then we had a short break. During the second block we spend almost half of the class working on our note taking skills. Ms. Lees finished with reviewing the scale factors to some people, then she start with the time zones. In the middle of the class Ms. Lees showed us the Cornell note taking video that was also posted on Ms. Lees blog. After that we did a written bee, to help review, congratulations to the girls for beating the boys!!!!!!

Why we did it

Ms. Lees showed us how to take notes from looking at the text features so we get a better idea on how we should jot the points down and which one is the title or the subtitles. The learning intention for doing a lot of note taking practice is to let us get use to take notes and to be good at it. Doing different kinds of notes is to help when we are taking notes in different subjects. Some topics works better using the outline form some works better using the web. Ms. Lees reviewed the scale factor and the time zones so that people will understand it when we are having the test. The purpose of doing the writing bee is to help us review the words because the spelling bee is next Friday.

Reflections/Connections

In every subject when you are studying, knowing how to take notes will be very useful. Also after taking down notes reviewing them can be very helpful when you have a test. Learning how to spell is very important since we are in a country that speaks both English and French.

Looking at the text features really helped with my note taking skills, so I felt pretty “marvy” today. Also I got twenty out of twenty on the written bee so I guess I don’t have any big problems. Only that I’m a little slow at taking notes probably because I don’t have enough practice.

Homework

We will get more time on Monday for notes taking. Geography test tomorrow so study!!!! Also study for the Can Spell.

learning log for Tuesday Nov 29 2011

What We Do

Today Ms. Lees checked our persuasive paragraphs homework from yesterday. The one who have not finished will be playing catch up. The second thing we did is the QAR sheet (Question-Answer Relationships). There were four kinds of question RT (Right There) T&S (Think and Search) A&Y (Author and You) OYO (On Your Own).We have to read the paragraphs from the sheet first. Then answer the question that had given and wrote which type of question was it. When you were finished took a text book from the back and write the outline up to page 30. We will keep working on this on Thursday double block. While we are doing all this Ms. Lees were working on our portfolio.

Why?

Ms. Lees check our homework to make sure everyone is doing their homework and know how many people are doing catch up. The QAR worksheet is to make us know more about the question and if you know what type of question and how the question asks it is going to be easier to answer.

Connection

Almost all the teachers will check the homework, so we should finish all the homework before we sleep. The QAR sheet can be used in anywhere that has question and answer.

Homework

The QAR worksheet are due Thursday and the paragraphs package has to be done Thursday too.

Tips

Make sure to follow “Lees Hum 8 @ FH” <- blog.
We have geography test on Friday and make sure to bring the geography package back if you take it from portfolio.

Learning Log for Friday November 25th

What we did

Today we started off by finishing up any homework from yesterday with Ms. Lees going around for a homework check. After that she changed the seating arrangement.
Next we learned about explanatory paragraphs and got our next assignment which
was to write a clever paragraph on the topics on the paper, from your heart
chart, or on how to write a good learning log with an outline.

Why we did it/learning intention

Ms. Lees checked our homework to make sure we are understanding it. We should learn how to write interesting paragraphs because we use writing everyday in life and being able to write good paragraphs is a skill. We should also know what the
types of paragraphs are, which we are learning in class.

Reflections/connections

Learning about paragraphs at school is good because you will need to write them in other subjects and later on in life like when you have a job.
I am marvy at this because I understood what explanatory paragraphs are and am all caught up in my work.

Homework

Write the explanatory paragraph I talked about using the topics from the sheet, your heart diagram or on the topic "how to write a good Learning Log".
Remember to double space.

Morgan will be doing the next learning log

Learning Log for November 24 2011

What We Did

Today for first block we talked about what to do during a power outage, so we get an idea on whether the school is open or not the best choice is to listen to the radio.

Next we did our landforms map of South America from geography that a lot of people didn’t finish.

Later Ms. Lees showed us some examples of blogs and comments, and how to be supportive, and comment in a nice tone. Also we should try different things on the blog.

While the people that came on Tuesday work on the descriptive paragraph exercise one and two, the people that weren’t here played “catch up” with Ms. Lees and went over the narrative paragraphs again.

Why We Did It

The learning intention of explain and discussing what to do during a power outage was to let students know what to do to check if the school is open. So there won’t be a lot of questions and people will show up and won’t be a lot of absents.

Doing the South America map was to help with labeling and follow directions also learn different vocabularies.

Ms. Lees showed us some examples to us, so that we get an idea on what the others were doing. She also showed the classmates our blog because we were kind of arguing, so she taught us how we should comment and say things in a nice tone also be supportive.

Going over the narrative paragraph again, so that we are all on the same page. We are learning paragraphs so that we can write strong ones, it will be very useful throughout your life.

Connection /Reflection

When there is a power outage or a big snow we should all listen to radio that do we have class or do our parents have to work.

The land form map of South America could be used to everywhere and maybe we will have to work in South America.

The narrative and descriptive paragraphs could be used in an essay when we apply for a job or school. It could also be a job for someone if they want to be a writer.

I know I should listen to the radio when there is a power outage or any emergency that school may be close. I know how South America looks like and it has many kind of land like rivers plateaus isthmus peninsula and capes. I understand what is the different between narrative and descriptive paragraphs and hoe to write them.

Homework

For homework we have exercise 1 and 2 for the descriptive paragraph. Exercise 1 is to pick a sentence and write four or five descriptive sentence to support it. For exercise 2 write a descriptive paragraph using the topic given or the ones on your heart map.

Learning Log for November 22 2011

What we did

Today Ms Lees told us to write a heart mapping for our self for about thirty minutes and volunteers share one of there memorize.

We also do PARAGRAGRAPHS.There are three kinds of paragraphs narrative, descriptive and persuasive. We are focusing on narrative today. We read two narrative paragraphs and talk about how can they be improve.

why we did it

The heart mapping is to use to know what memorize that we had and may used to be the topic of the paragraphs that we will write this week.

The two paragraphs we read today both are narrative and we talk about what skill do they use that we do not use them often. The first one have many adjective and the second one have time period but the first one is the way that we are not use to and less people using it.

My Reflections / Connections

The two narrative paragraphs show us what is a narrative paragraph and it is not only in humanities class this will used forever this kind of paragraphs can be used anywhere and it is important to learn how to write a good paragraphs.

Homework

Write a narrative paragraph and the topic is one of the thing on your heart mapping. It is due Thursday if you finish this one you could do next one so you do not have homework on Thursday

Next humanities is on Thursday and Dylan is doing learning log

Monday, 21 November 2011

Learning Log for November 21 2011

What we did

Today at school Ms.Lees showed us some examples of the blogs that grade 9s did. When posting a blog what the expectations are, and how we should do it.

When it is not your turn to post, it's your turn to read and comment on what the other people posted. To give advice and/or add more details on what they wrote about.

After some explanations, we were told to get in to our blog groups and decide who is posting on which day for this week.

Ms.Lees handed out page 70 which is the South America land form questions. We spend the rest of the class working on our South America land form questions and map, using the atlas and worksheet to help.

Why we did it

The learning intention of going over the expectations of writing a post is to let people understand how we should do it so there won't be a lot of questioning and misunderstanding. Also there won't be posts that are not acceptable, for example only two sentences or informal language being used.

The purpose of the South America land form map is to help with the skill, follow the directions given. To learn more about the vocabularies snd the meanings of land forms. We did the picture dictionaries, but we had never label it on a map before, so it also helps with recognizing the difference of some similar land forms.

Connections

The expectations that we learned today can be very helpful, when creating other blogs for different purposes we can get an idea on what the expectations will be. In the future, whether it's at school or at work knowing how to share information on a blog is very important.

In all subjects at school or working on a project at work knowing how to follow instructions is a very big part of it. So that is why we have a lot of practices. When traveling to different countries an atlas will be very useful if you know how to use it.

Homework

Tomorrow Ms.Lees will let us work on our South America map, so you don't have to finish it today. The only thing is to make sure your portfolio is ready. Also remember to comment on posts!!! It counts as homework too.

Michael H will be posting on Tuesday
