Learning log for Tuesday, February 28

What we did
Today when we came in Ms. Lees talked about the teacher job action and how there may be a possible strike. For the rest of the block we got time to work on our skit scripts with our groups and plan out what we each need/need to bring. People who didn’t hand in their diary yesterday got put into groups today and people who still didn't finish their diary have to go to the LST room during lunch.

Why we did it
We worked on our script and props because we will be performing our skit very soon so we need to prepare and plan out what we need.

Reflections and connections
I think that this will be useful to us later in life because it is teaching us lots of things. One is to plan ahead. We are learning this by having to plan out our props and scenes. We are learning to work with others because we are working in a group.

Homework/reminders
No homework except for scripts.

Learning log for Monday, February 27

What we did
Today our diaries were due. Most people weren’t finished theirs so they got to work on them. Those who were finished got put into groups so they can make a skit about their medieval roles and how they might meet.

Why we did it
We worked on our diaries and skit because for the diary we could practise writing a bibliography and we can learn about the middle ages for both.

Reflections and connections
I think that this will be useful to us later in life because we are learning to work with others because we are working in a group.

Homework/reminders
Diaries and scripts. Check Ms. Lees blog for schedule from now to spring break.

What We Did

We review Chapter 6-10 There Will be wolves questions, and we have a quiz on chapter 6-10.

Why?

We have a chapter quiz so Ms.Lees was sure we all know what the book mean and to review the book.

Reflection/connection

Ms.Lees review the questions before having a quiz. Not all the teacher do this, so make sure you review the before having every quiz.

What We Did

Today was double block day. Ms.lees first go over the schedule until spring break. Then we go through there will be wolves question 1-5. After that was break. after break we have a quiz on chapter 1-5.Rest of the time Ms.lees let us work on "daily life"

Why?

Ms.lees told us the next two weeks schedule because some of us are going early. we review chapter 1-5 question because we have a quiz later. We have a quiz is to make sure we know what the book mean.

connection/reflection

To have chapter quiz is to make sure we review what happened early and this may use on other subject too. So we know when to review and how.

tips

next two weeks schedule is on Ms.Lees' blog

Learning log for Thursday, February 23

What we did:
Today was a double block day. First Ms. Lees went over the next few weeks with us just in case we won’t be here. Next we discussed some of our chapter 1-5 questions for “There will be Wolves” in detail. After we did that it was time for break. When we came back we did our 1-6 chapter test we got some time to work on our “diary in the life of…” for the rest of the block.

Why we did it:
We discussed our question answers because it acted a little as a review for our test which we did because Ms. Lees wants to know our understandings of the novel. We got time to work on our diary assignment because our notes are due tomorrow.

My reflections:
I think I did better on my test because we reviewed the questions, and because I got an hour in class to work on my assignment, I am close to finishing. This is useful in life because you should always use your time wisely and study for tests.

Reminders and homework
Check Ms. Lees’ blog for the schedule for next week and remember to bring your notes in tomorrow. Remember to try and get at least 10 posts!

What We Did

Today we are in library too.(we are in library yesterday) Ms.Lees was not here today and what we did is go on the computer and find information for our role. Today is the last class that we can work on our role during class.

Why

Ms.Less gave us class time to working on the role because she doesn't want us to do this at home. One of our information have to be physical book so we find books in library that we can work on.

connections/reflection

We know how to do a project search and this can be use on every subject's project. We have to know how to do the project search so we can do project later on higher grade.

Homework

Homework is to finished There Will Be Wolves Chapter 9 questions on Thursday.

other things happened during class

Today Joey and Roger bring there laptop to school so they do not have to use school's computer and they can save their project in their own laptop.

My 30 day challenge

My 30 day challenge is doing well. I have remembered to practice everyday except for last weekend because I got a cold. So far I learned a few notes and can almost play a song!

My 30 Day Challenge Progress Report

I…guess I had been successful? I actually jump roped every day for ten minutes, well almost every day…sometime I didn’t jump rope because my legs were sore from beep test or because I got home late. They are excuses to take a break, but I didn’t just let myself go like that I set a rule for myself, if I didn’t jump for ten minutes I will need to do it the next day or later on. I recorded the minutes I didn’t jump rope that day and I would add them up and warn myself to do it the next day. I still need to make up 35 minutes of jump rope time. I remind myself to jump rope by saying that if I don’t exercise I will be larger than an elephant and I won’t be able to squeeze through the door(most of you don’t know, I eat a lot and by a lot I mean a lot ). About my computer one…I think I was successful too, I didn’t use the computer for a long time except when my homework needs to be done on the computer.

At the beginning of the month I didn’t think that I would actually achieve my goals but I sort of did, so I was pretty surprised. I think I can keep on doing this until the end of the month; it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. I saw that most of the people were doing what they were supposed to do every day.

Learning Log for Monday February 20th 2012

What we did

Today our humanities class was in the library. We started on our new project.

First Ms.Lees explained our new assignment which was to take notes on a daily life of this certain character you pick and by using the character, you write a diary based on what they eat, work, their duties… the roles were: peasant’s son, maid of castle, page, lady of manor etc….

Ms.Lees told us how to do a bibliography and what it should include:

Book

Ÿ Title

Ÿ Publishing company

Ÿ Author(s) or editor(s)

Ÿ Copyright date (most recent)

Ÿ Publishing city

ž Choose Canadian and U.S cities over international cities

ž Closer to Vancouver

Website

Ÿ Title

Ÿ Date accessed

Ÿ Author(s)

Ÿ url

Ÿ look for “how to cite this page”

Then Ms.Lees took out a container with all the roles in it and she went around and we picked our roles. It was pretty exciting.

We started our research. We need to have at least three sources and one must be a physical book. We worked on our note making and researching until break time.

Why we did it

The purpose of this assignment was to let us learn more about the life in middle ages and about a specific person that played a part in the middle ages. We learned about what a bibliography should have so that we won’t take credits for the information.

Reflections/Connections

It was quiet working in the library, and it helped me focus on note making and researching the role I’m playing. I did a few bibliographies before but this time I learned a more professional way, so it was really helpful

When doing a research project in the future, you might always need to make a bibliography, so learning how to make one is important and useful. Researching is a big part of assignments, you need to look for information and organize you notes, and then you write them in to paragraphs.

Learning Log for February 16th 2012

What we did

Today was a double block day. We had a substitute; she has a very loud voice. Anyways here is today’s learning log post.

Today in humanities, right after the whole class got seated the sub told us our schedule for today’s double block humanities. First we took notes using the Pathways textbook. The notes we took could be in the three formats: linear outline, web, or Cornell, you should pick the kind that works best for you. For the people who don’t know what to choose, they could consider using web or outline format because they Cornell note making are used better when studying. We took notes from Pathways textbook page 49 to 53 on “Manor Life”. About half of the class finished their notes before break.

After break for the people who had finished note making they were assigned to work on a Venn diagram on women’s role. We need to gather information from the textbook, some on page 50 to 51 and 53, more information in chapter 5. Our task was to compare women’s role in the Middle Ages from the women’s role nowadays. The Pathways textbook are to stay in class so note making and the assignment on Venn diagram should be done before leaving the class. If you didn’t finish both the assignments in class you will need to go to flex to complete it.

When we’re done comparing we worked on There will be Wolves chapter 8 questions that is due on Friday.

Some people finished everything before the last block ends so they read ahead in There will be Wolves.

Why we did it

Before winter break we worked on our first note making assignment on Pathways textbook. Ms.Lees taught us some few tips on note making Ex: look for text features, always date and title your note, don’t make sentences. We did a Venn diagram was to let us learn something about women’s role in the middle ages and how different it is compare to a woman’s role today. We can learn to compare and look for difference and similarity from this activity.

Doing chapter questions can help us learn more about the story. It could extend our thinking, and let us practise answering questions with detailed information and a complete response.

Reflections /Connections

Today, surprisingly, I finished note making and the Venn diagram in class. The first time when I did note making it was kind of difficult for me to figure out the main ideas and the subtitles etc… but this time I finished chapter 2 without any big problems it was actually easier for me to make notes. I worked with Venn diagrams before; I didn’t have any troubles on the assignment.

Note making can help us in other subjects too, and not just in humanities. When watching a video and trying to look for the main ideas, I am sure the practice we are doing right now will help us in the future. Ex: when you make notes to do research.Doing the Venn diagram is a very good way to organize your data. In every subject, when you are comparing things the comparing skills we are learning right now can help us with the task. Ex: outside of school, when you compare the brand of two chocolates, you can use a Venn diagram.

Homework

Don’t forget you thirty days challenge

Learning Log for 14/02/2012

What we did

Today in class we worked on chapter 2 notes for our middle ages textbook(I currently don't remember the name of the book) and we talked about Feudalism. Feudalism meant the three "f"s; Fief which means land; fealty which means loyalty; and finally faith which refers to religion. The feudal contract was that land was given in exchange for loyalty; an oath was made to "cement" or confirm this bond. Feudalism was founded by Count William, or as known by others he was called: William the Conqueror, or William the Bastard. The bastard part refers to his birth. He made feudalism after the Battle of Hastings.

Part way through the notes we made a pyramid of the social structure that was around the time William brought in feudalism. It went like this:

King

Knights/Barons/Greater Nobles

Knights/Lesser Nobles

Knights/Minor Nobles

Freeholders/Serfs

It is very similar to how religion worked at the time as well:

Pope

Cardinals

Arch Bishops

Bishops

Nuns/Monks

Parish Priests

It was the job of the lesser peoples to work for the higher peoples. However it was the job of the higher peoples to protect the lesser peoples. There is also a difference between serfs and freeholders. Freeholders had to pay to farm and to live on the land, however serfs were considered property and thus have to farm without having to pay and they have a right to live on the land.

Closer to the end of class we were told to create a Venn diagram of the differences and similarities of the Vassal Oath and the Canadian Oath of Citizenship. What I found about the Canada Oath that was different from the Vassal Oath is that it has nothing to do with religion and it is quite shorter. The wording that was used was also very different. The differences that Vassal Oath had that I could find that you needed to give the king a kiss...... I don't remember anything about a kiss to a specific spot so feel free to correct me if needed. The similarities between them is that we are swearing loyalty to royalty.

Why we did it

We did it so that we can learn more of the middle ages and how similar they were to us as well as how different they were to our modern times.

Reflection/Connections

The class was quite rowdy today so I had a bit of a hard time focusing. I bet a few others felt the same. The only connection I can think of is if you had plans to go into Politics or be a Historian. Knowing this while being a historian you may be able to find links to other cultures. For a politician knowing this could help you make proper choices in big decisions like how to deal with a negative reaction such as how William dealt with the rebels that happened not long after the Battle of Hastings.

Homework

The homework today is to do chapter 8 questions for our novel "There Will Be Wolves"

Tips

My tips for you are to be quieter in class so others can focus better. Also to finish the questions before tomorrow or you may be having a hard time in class. Don't forget to do your thirty day challenge!

Learning Log for February 9th 2012

What We Did

Today in humanities we started off with discussing our 30 days challenge, it took almost a whole block. Everyone shared their challenge (including me) with the rest of the classmates and told everyone if we have accomplished them so far. Some people were having difficulties achieving their goals, so Ms.Lees would ask for some tips and suggestions from other students. When you are having a hard time reaching your goal(s) here are some tips that might help:

l Decrease the time of activity so it is more sustainable. When everything is steady and on track you can increase the time of the activity little by little.

l Start your challenge small, then work your way to something more challenging.

l Give yourself punishments when you didn’t do what you are supposed to do that day, give yourself treats for achieving goals. Doing this can help increase your motivations.

l Ask someone to remind you so that you won’t forget follow the rules you made.

After discussing, for about the last ten minutes of the block, Ms.Lees told us to write down the things that we know or learned from the crusade on a piece of paper. It doesn’t matter if it is written in point form or web form, as long as you put down where you get the information in brackets, whether it’s from There Will Be Wolves or Middle Ages novel

Ex: -everyone is welcome on the Crusade, even thieves and murderers (There Will Be Wolves)

-the symbol of the Crusade is Red Cross (novel)

Then it was break time~~~

During the beginning of second block we finished jotting down information about the Crusade we left off the first block. Then we watched a part of a movie called Kingdom of Heaven, it was talking about crusades. While we watch the movie, Ms.Lees would stop at some part and ask us what the characters just said and what it means. We also need to put down what we learned about the crusade from the movie on the paper. After that Ms.Lees let us work quietly on our There Will Be Wolves chapter 6 questions (in blue or black pen) in class.

Why We Did It

The purpose of letting everyone share their challenge one by one is so that we get ideas from other people on how to achieve goals and when you are struggling with your challenge you might get some really useful tips and suggestions from someone else. Another good thing is that you might discover some really interesting challenges.

The learning intention for writing down what we learned about crusade was to let us gather all our thoughts together. We had learned quite a lot about the crusade, I guess it might be clearer to write everything down on paper than keeping all in our brain. There might be a big big project waiting for us, so that might be something we will need later on.

We watched the movie because it contained some important information Ms.Lees wanted us to know. It is easier to learn from visual, when you read a book it might be hard to picture what is going on during that time period but if you watch a movie it would be easier to understand. Ms.Lees would pause and ask us what is going on was to make sure we are on the same page and that we understood the dialogue.

We worked on our chapter 6 in class so that if anyone has a question they can ask the teacher right away.

Reflections/Connections

I guess I am marvy today. So far I have no problems with achieving my goals. In the novel, Sword of the Rightful King because it took place in the dark ages it didn’t talk about the crusades. So almost everything from my paper is from There Will Be Wolves, I hope that is okay. I only had a little trouble when we were watching the movie; I couldn’t hear some parts so I had to wait for Ms.Lees to replay it in order to understand.

In the future you will need to share with others and give out tips for others. Later on in life when you realize something is not going well as you planned you will always need to find a way that that works the best, just like the tips in 30 days challenge you need to think about what helps and what doesn’t. Watching the movie and taking notes is needed in every subject, you write down what you heard from the movie.

Homework

There Will be Wolves chapter 6 questions is due on Monday. Remember to write it in pen or typed.

Tips

Make sure your answers of the questions are proofread. It would be better to let someone who had never read the story read your answers, if it’s a good answer than they should understand what you are talking about.

30 days challenge Tiffany

I have two goals for the 30 days challenge. The first goal is to exercise more; I am going to jump rope for at least 10 minutes each day. The main reason is to get taller, and exercising is very important so it's good to exercise. My second target is to limit my time using the computer, I should only use about 2 hours or less of computer time each day. The intention for setting this goal is to let myself do something more meaningful than wasting my time on the computer. My plan for reaching the goals is to ask my family for help. They will remind me when I forget to do what I'm suppose to do. Maybe participate and work with me, so that I won't be alone. I hope I can achieve my goals!!

30 day challenge~Sara

My 30 day challenge is to learn to play the flute. The reason why I chose this is because I always wanted to learn to play it, and I already have one sitting around home. I plan to reach this goal by practising about 30 minutes every day for 30 days.

30 days Challenges---Michael

My 30 days challenges is try not to turn on my computer except for going to Blogger for 30 days. I have spent too much time on my compute like watching youtube, go on facebook and go on reddit. I almost spent half of my time on my computer. I should read some books rather sit with my computer.

Learning Log for February 3rd 2012

What we did

Ms.Lees talked about the criteria’s of a good detailed answer when answer questions it was something like this:

Ÿ Always answer the question with full sentence; your answer should be the kind when you would know the question just by reading the answers for it.

Ÿ Avoid “I think...” and “In my opinion...” The answers are what you are thinking, so it is unnecessary to put words like “I believe” because it is like saying I think I believe. Usually in all sentences just erase I think or I believe and the sentence would still make sense.

Ex: I think the fire in Ursula’s home started…

The fire in Ursula’s home started…ßworks too.

Ÿ Always point out what the pronoun was before writing it. When reading the answers it would be difficult to understand if you just wrote start off with a pronoun and not the name. You have to let people know what it/she/he you are referring to before writing them.

Ex: She is the kind of person…ßwho is she?

Britta is the kind of person…she…ßyou can put pronoun after you have the name.

Ÿ Be specific about your answers what this or that means, don’t let the readers question because it is not detailed enough. Explain your answers.

Ÿ Watch your spelling and try to avoid grammar mistakes.

Ms.Lees paired us up and we critiqued, marked and went over our chapter 3 and 4 questions, we also added some details to our answers after that. Ms.Lees told us it is very important to actually go over your answers with your partners not trade papers with your partner and mark each other’s work.

Why we did it

We edited our chapter questions because Ms.Lees wants us to work on answering questions very detailed and formal. As for why we did it in pairs it was because sometimes you can’t see your mistakes in your writing you need someone to edit it for you. Also when you write something not very detailed your brain might fill in the details and so you won’t realize your mistakes in your writing, but when you let someone else read it they will point out the mistakes.

Connections/Reflections

I worked pretty well with my partner we finished the editing before class ends. The only thing was that I still have some answers that are not thorough enough, and a few grammar mistakes.

Editing is very important, and not just because if you want to be an editor, editing is important throughout your life. When you hand in projects, homework you need to make sure it is fully complete and you wrote a good answer for it. Writing good responses, it doesn’t have to be in school it could be in work.

Homework

Correct your chapter 3 and 4 marked questions.

Tips

Let someone else check your work, it might help.

Check Ms.Lees blog for new updates.

Learning Log for Friday, 3 February 2012

What we did
Today Ms. Lees told us to take out our chapters 3 and 4 answers. Next we edited and discussed our chapters 3 and 4 answers with a partner Ms. Lees assigned us by one of us reading the answer out loud and finding the errors the other made. People who didn’t complete the chapters 3 and 4 had to finish them first. After that we
got time to work on our chapter 5 questions.

Why we did it
We edited with a partner because it is easier to find our mistakes when someone else is reading them out loud. We edited our answers so they are more thorough and so our chapter 5 answers will be close to perfect. We got time to work on our
chapter 5 because a lot of people were finished early.

My reflections
I think this will be useful in life because it will make your skills in editing other
people's work and your own work better. You will need to edit almost everything
you write.

Homework
Remember to fill out your languages chart and do your chapter 5 questions.
