Learning Log for February 16th 2012

What we did

Today was a double block day. We had a substitute; she has a very loud voice. Anyways here is today’s learning log post.

Today in humanities, right after the whole class got seated the sub told us our schedule for today’s double block humanities. First we took notes using the Pathways textbook. The notes we took could be in the three formats: linear outline, web, or Cornell, you should pick the kind that works best for you. For the people who don’t know what to choose, they could consider using web or outline format because they Cornell note making are used better when studying. We took notes from Pathways textbook page 49 to 53 on “Manor Life”. About half of the class finished their notes before break.

After break for the people who had finished note making they were assigned to work on a Venn diagram on women’s role. We need to gather information from the textbook, some on page 50 to 51 and 53, more information in chapter 5. Our task was to compare women’s role in the Middle Ages from the women’s role nowadays. The Pathways textbook are to stay in class so note making and the assignment on Venn diagram should be done before leaving the class. If you didn’t finish both the assignments in class you will need to go to flex to complete it.

When we’re done comparing we worked on There will be Wolves chapter 8 questions that is due on Friday.

Some people finished everything before the last block ends so they read ahead in There will be Wolves.

Why we did it

Before winter break we worked on our first note making assignment on Pathways textbook. Ms.Lees taught us some few tips on note making Ex: look for text features, always date and title your note, don’t make sentences. We did a Venn diagram was to let us learn something about women’s role in the middle ages and how different it is compare to a woman’s role today. We can learn to compare and look for difference and similarity from this activity.

Doing chapter questions can help us learn more about the story. It could extend our thinking, and let us practise answering questions with detailed information and a complete response.

Reflections /Connections

Today, surprisingly, I finished note making and the Venn diagram in class. The first time when I did note making it was kind of difficult for me to figure out the main ideas and the subtitles etc… but this time I finished chapter 2 without any big problems it was actually easier for me to make notes. I worked with Venn diagrams before; I didn’t have any troubles on the assignment.

Note making can help us in other subjects too, and not just in humanities. When watching a video and trying to look for the main ideas, I am sure the practice we are doing right now will help us in the future. Ex: when you make notes to do research.Doing the Venn diagram is a very good way to organize your data. In every subject, when you are comparing things the comparing skills we are learning right now can help us with the task. Ex: outside of school, when you compare the brand of two chocolates, you can use a Venn diagram.
